What the Mountain
Chooses to Grow
Rare, wild-harvested botanicals, carried down from Himachal Pradesh and the ranges around it, with nothing added and nothing lost.
Entering TheForest
Cedar and rhododendron close overhead. Beneath them, an understory that has fed and healed the ranges of Himachal Pradesh for generations — most of it never planted by human hands.
Meeting TheCollectors
They know these forests by season, not by map — which ridge flowers first, which hollow holds morels after rain. Discovery here isn't luck. It's knowledge, walked into the ground for decades.
The HarvestIs Brief
Each species has its own narrow window. Miss it, and you wait a full year. SYD's collectors track every season so nothing is taken too early, or left too late.
Held InTrust
Every partnership is direct — no layers of middlemen between the person who harvests and the price they're paid. Prosperity here is measured in seasons, not quarters.
- Season
- March – May
- Altitude
- 1,800 – 3,000 m
- Region
- Chamba & Kullu, Himachal Pradesh
It appears for a few weeks after the snow retreats, in the ash of old fires and beneath deodar litter — then vanishes until the next thaw.
Gathered by hand for generations, traded by weight of trust long before it reached a certificate.
- Season
- Leaves year-round, best pre-monsoon
- Altitude
- 300 – 1,200 m
- Region
- Una & Bilaspur foothills, Himachal Pradesh
A single tree can carry a household through the lean months — every part of it, root to seed, put to use.
Long known in household medicine as the tree that asks for little and gives back everything.
Harvested green and tender, sliced into curries, sambar and dals for their mild, asparagus-like flavour.
Left on the branch until the pod hardens and darkens to a blackened brown, this stage is grown on for what's inside rather than the fibrous shell — too tough to cook, it is split for its seeds, which are pressed into ben oil, roasted as a snack, or ground and stirred into water as a traditional clarifying agent. Fully dried, blackened pods are also saved as seed stock for the next planting.
- Season
- September – October
- Altitude
- 2,700 – 3,800 m
- Region
- Lahaul-Spiti, Himachal Pradesh
It grows where little else will, on cold riverbanks and scree slopes, its thorned branches heavy with sour orange fruit.
Used for generations by high-altitude communities to see through the harshest months of winter.
- Season
- Leaves in spring, fibre in autumn
- Altitude
- 1,500 – 2,800 m
- Region
- Kullu & Mandi valleys, Himachal Pradesh
It stings before it gives — the sharp defence of a plant that has fed and clothed mountain communities for centuries.
Its fibre has been spun into cloth in these hills long before synthetic thread arrived.
- Season
- Berries ripen through autumn
- Altitude
- 2,500 – 3,600 m
- Region
- Kinnaur & Spiti, Himachal Pradesh
Its smoke has carried prayers through these valleys for as long as anyone can remember, burned at doorways at first light.
Considered sacred in the high villages, offered before it is ever sold.
- Season
- March – April
- Altitude
- 1,500 – 3,000 m
- Region
- Shimla & Kullu hills, Himachal Pradesh
For a few weeks each spring, entire hillsides turn red with it — a bloom so brief that villages plan their season around it.
Pressed into juice and syrup in mountain households long before it became an ingredient anyone exported.
